Singer Ville Valo in a Interview talks about his talent for chess and his family plans.
Dark clouths, long hair, dreamer look: Ville Valo, 36 in a Birlin Hotel sitting nearby window. Despite the singer has achieved many important feats with his band on their carrier on Metal Music scene, the musician reveals a peculiar sense of humor.
He doesn’t have any problem to assume that he loughs of himself, turning off the Ship sometimes. All remains serious only when we talk about the new album songs, Tears On Tape. We feel that the music has a deep and important meaning/place in his heart.
Is that true that you have a talent and apreciate a lot to play Chess?
Let me explain this way: I like to play chess a lot, sometimes, but unfortunately I wasn’t blessed with and I don’t have a talent of a Garri Kasparow.
Despite all that , you are part of the Chess Club in Mannheim. How it could happened?
An old friend was part of the club, to be honest, I was registred. I, Jani Purttinen and Miko Paananen, both great chess players.
So ..while you’re touring you always have the chance to play a match.
You know, what we do about two years? We have fun in every city we are going to perform and one of the favourite places is the local Chess Club.
That doesn’t sound much to the “ Sex – Drugs- & - Rock’n’Roll” Excess.
Ville Hermanni Valo was born in 22nd November 1976 in Helsinki. Since he was a child he already showed interest to play several musical instruments.
In 1995, the singer with his school friends formed the band called His Infernal Majesty, usually known shortly as HIM or H.I.M.
H.I.M.’s début album, Greatest Lovesongs Vol. 666” was released in 1997. Two years later, the band achieved 1st Place in the International charts with the single “ Join Me ( in Death) of the album “Razorblade Romance”.
At the same time, Valo joined other music projects with bands such as: Bloodhound Gang, Cradle Of Filth, The 69 Eyes oder The Mission. The duet with Natalia Avelon, in 2007, was written for the “Das wilde Leben” (“Eight Miles High”) movie soundtrack and achieved the 2nd Place in the Charts during several weeks.
HIM’s new album release date is on Friday.
Yes, other bands have Stippers, but for us the Chess Table is fascinating. No, honestly: at the beginning of ou carrier we join every single party.
Nowadays we can’t do it anymore. For us is enough a show performance and prepare ourselves 100% for the next one.
That means you’re enjoying a extremely healthy way of life?
Ohh, well, I keep some addictions alive. I quit smoking two years, but the tour stress made me take a cigarrete back to my hands.
In What alcohol is concerned , I kept cleaned over 4 years and a half, but it hasn’t worked forever. There are times that I don’t drink any type of alcoholic drinks, but there’s other times that I start again and don’t stay by the first glass of wine. We, as finns, we are alcohol addicts.
Do you try to hide or let people know through the alcohol addiction your most deep and dark thoughts?
One of the characteristics of the Scandinavian People is the melancholic way.
Also HIM shows a certain melancholy. In “ All Lips go Blue” you talk about death.
This song represent a Momento Mori, on other hand, makes to remember things that happened in the past. Everyone has to die one day, we can’t avoid that natural human state. And because of the fact that we can’t escape to the inevitable, I’m not worry about that moment, I even don’t think about it. It’s better and we should take the best of every instant.
If you can do this forever?
Phew, no. Sometimes I get to a point where nothing seems to have a value. Some would then probably attest to my depression. I myself do not see it quite so extreme. I think we all go through occasional moments in which we are like exhausted.
How do you deal with it?
I’ll wait and stand by that. In this situation only one thing: patience.
You would have the chance to ask for help.
That is not me. I am a lone wolf who likes to be alone.
Amazing. “WLSTD” gives the impression that you are totally dependent on love and relationships.
So I have not even meant. I think people who have no passion for anything – be it for a partner, the job or a hobby – go through life like zombies. You are missing something essential.
What has absolute priority in your life?
My music, my friend. However, it is often difficult to find the balance between the two.
You are now in mid 30. Do you think about children?
I’ve done enough damage already. Oh, that was just fun. A family does not have to be a great plan, I think the appropriate time for young eventually comes all by itself, but even if I wanted to be a father: I do not necessarily have to get married. My freedom is very important to me. In a marriage, I would feel just like down in chains.
Because your sex symbol image could be damaged?
It’s really flattering to be considered attractive, clear. But my image also doesn’t define myself alone. I want to be recognized primarily as a musician
